My name is Doron Svirsky and I am the father of Tommy.
Once discovered Tommy's disease radical change in the house Has been occured. Both me and my wife were forced to stop working and always one of us was with Tommy and the other was at home to take care of the other childrens.
It is difficult to describe the impact of hearing the news that your child has cancer.
The only thought that comes to mind is that you must do everything to save the child and everything else gets pushed to the side. However, life not stop. There is still a home to take care of, other: childrens who need to eat, bills that need to be paid, a house and laundry to be taken care of.
All these tasks become very difficult when parents most of their time in the hospital and parents are torn between the need to treat the rest of the family and the need to be with a sick child.
We were fortunate to recieve warm support from our work places financially and emotionally (I work for "Brainsway" and my wife in the ministry of education).
I'll never forget what my CEO Uzi Sofer said " You will worry about your child and don't bother your self with money problems."
However financial and emotional support from work by no means a given, and not every employer is generous and has such empathy.
Cancer and other serious illnesses require hospital stays for months and sometimes even years. When both parents are concentrated on child care and are forced to stop working, severe economic distress is a big concern which is addedd to the main stress concerning the health of the individual.
On the one hand you have to display resilience and optimism in front of the child and family but on the other hand you have to cope with the almost immposible to grasp thought that you child has an incurable disease.
It is difficult to bear, and we saw a families fall apart both financially and mentally.
Although Social Security payments help, It is simply not enough.
From time to time, groups of parents in the department organized themselves and tried to help financially families who were in economic turmoil.
From our experience, we felt a strong need to establish families Support centers for parents with a child struggling serious illness.
The aim is to support basic needs using a system based on coupons, to help cover food, electricity , water, transportation and laundry. This will help to remove additional concerns and allow the parents to focus on the treatment of the sick child.
